Massaponax, VA

Geographic Location

Massaponax is an unincorporated community of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, just east of the Spotsylvania Courthouse and about 4.5 miles south of Four Mile Fork, another unincorporated community.

Overall personality

It’s a busy area due to I-95 and US Route 1, tons of shopping and commuters, but there is still that laid back feeling. It’s not as high stressed as feeling you get around the Route 3 corridor.
Defining Characteristics
The Massaponax area continues to grow with more businesses and shops moving into the area. It sits on the Eastern side of Spotsylvania county and is the last major shopping area until you get into Caroline County, as you travel South on Route 1.
Shopping centers include Southpoint I, Southpoint II and Cosner’s Corner, where you are likely to find everything you need without traveling a great distance.
The medical field is very prominent in the Massaponax area. The newer Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center (privately owned) along with Emergency and Outpatient Center at Lee’s Hill, which is part of Mary Washington Hospital (non-profit), service the area’s patients. Many doctors have expanded their coverage areas to Massaponax, by working 1-2 days a week in the area, so patients don’t have to travel far to receive care.

Bowling, Movie Theatre, Shopping, Restaurants, short distance to Fredericksburg Field House, Skydiving School, Gyms, Antique Stores and Golfing.
Massaponax Church - founded in 1788, the building was built in 1859. During the Civil War, it was used as a headquarters for both the Confederate and Union armies, a hospital for the wounded, and a stable.
Other attractions within a 15 minute drive:  New Post Golf Range, Fredericksburg Area Soccer Association Field, Belvedere Plantation, A. Smith Bowman Distillary, Lee’s Retreat (tour of Blue & Gray Brewery), Rappahannock Rail Road Museum, Slaughter Pen Farm, and Snead’s Farm.

Transportation Options

Nearby major highways:
I-95 crosses over US Route 1 right through Massaponax. Travelers can exit I-95 via the Massaponax Exit 126 and are immediately deposited onto Route 1 at the end of the ramp. This area is heavily traveled by tourists and local community members.
Public transportation options:
Fredericksburg Regional Transit Bus (Fred Bus) operates throughout the area and covers several counties. Regular service fare is $1.00 and off-peak hours are $.50.
The newly opened Spostylvania County VRE Station (Virginia Railway Express) is located in the Massaponax area. It is the southern-most stop on the route. There are 1500 parking spaces for commuters or those traveling farther via Amtrack. Parking is free.
